Occasional Care

How often have you had to re-schedule appointments or decline social invitations because you didn’t have anyone to look after the children? Have you ever needed some time to yourself to shop, visit friends or just get some work done but couldn’t organise a babysitter?

At MELC we know how limiting it can be when families don’t have flexible, reliable childcare options available to them.

It’s really important for Mums and Dads, and even grandparents, to have an opportunity to take time out from looking after the children, without having to pay for regular, long-day child care.

Many parents don’t want to, or can’t, place their child in long-day care and the option of occasional care can give them access to safe, reliable childcare if and when they need it.

Every parent needs time to themselves at some stage!

How does it work?

Occasional care at MELC is available from Monday to Friday (depending on availability) and can be taken as a full or half day. Children using MELC for occasional care join in with the long-day care groups appropriate for their age. For more information on the carers, facilities, routines and activities we do in long-day care click here.

Simply register your child’s details with us using our Registration Form, even if you don’t have an immediate need for occasional care, and this will make it easier for you to request time for your child at the Centre, particularly on short notice. Then just contact us if and when you need to book a full or half day of occasional care.

Prior to your child spending a full or half day at our Centre, you will need to complete an Enrolment Form which provides us with more comprehensive information about your child.

Occasional Care FAQs

How much does occasional care cost?

Our occasional care fees are the same as our long day care fees which are (effective 28 June  2022):

  • Children 0-2 years are $136 per day
  • Children 2-3 years are $130 per day
  • Children 3-4 years are $125 per day
  • Children 4-5 years are $123 per day
Are there different rooms for children in occasional care?

Children attending occassional care at MELC are placed in the relevant room for their age, together with the long day care children.

For more information on the various rooms we have, visit the Long Day Care section of this website.

What do I need to bring when I place my child in occasional care?

Bring nothing but a change of clothes for your child! Our Centre provides everything else – all food and drinks, bedding, sunscreen, hats and nappies. If your baby is still on formula, you will need to provide named bottles and formula, not made up.

Can I come in and see the Centre before I book occasional care?

Please do! We really encourage parents to come and visit our fabulous facilities to get the real feel for what we are about, before you make any bookings.

Are there any benefits to using occasional care?

Occasional care can provide a valuable introduction to child care for younger children who may benefit from a more gradual approach to being placed in centre-based care.  Other benefits include:

  • It can assist with the “socialisation” of your child and provide valuable opportunities for interaction with children of a similar age
  • It can take place as little or as often as you need – without the burden of paying for a regular place in a centre
  • It is safe, reliable and occurs in an environment that is regulated on the number of children, size of rooms and ratio of staff/carers to children
  • It provides stimulating, educational activities suitable for your child’s individual stage of development

Most importantly, it is fun for your child!

How much notice do I need to give if I would like to book occasional care for my child?

The more notice you can provide the Centre, the better prepared we can be to meet your needs. Having said that, we do understand that sometimes things come up unexpectedly and we usually only need one day's notice. When you know what day/s you require, just phone the Centre and we will check availability for you straight away.

What should I do if I think I might be interested in using occasional care?

The first step is be to complete and return the Registration for Occasional Care Form. Once we have all of your details on file, it makes it much easier to book into the Centre, particularly on short notice. Even if you’re not planning to use our service straight away, it’s a good idea to register.

Is government assistance available for occasional care?

Our Centre is licensed and accredited by ACECQA.  By contacting the Family Assistance Office and quoting our Customer Reference Number (407 185 690H) your rebate can be calculated.  As of 2 July 2018 the new child care rebate system is in effect.
